Client Guideline ACT
Project name Bridge 4004
Start date August 2019
Completion date March 2020
Contract value $600k

BRIEF

The bridge crosses over the Molonglo River and is critical infrastructure for freight movements across the territory.

The purpose of this project was to enhance the capacity to enable re-rating of the structure to SM1600 vehicle loading in accordance with AS5100-2017.
We assisted Guideline ACT throughout the tender process and were awarded the project under a schedule of rates arrangement.

Far more intensive than traditional structural steel operations, bridge strengthening projects require compliance with strict specifications. Our team worked to RMS Specifications, AS5131 and TfNSW QA Specification B201 Steelwork for Bridges.
Access for installation below the bridge deck was challenging. The new supporting steelwork weighed in excess of 8.0 tonnes per pier with individual members measuring over 15 metres long and approximately 3.0 tonnes each. These members were transported to the construction site using a 25T Franna crane and carried across the river via a temporary river crossing. Our rigging team worked closely with the crane crew to manoeuvre the members into position – all from the underside of the bridge.

The project was completed with minimal disruption to traffic above and was awarded the 2020 Master Builders and Asset Construction Hire Excellence Awards for Civil Bridgeworks.
